I finally crashed! Yay! 10MPH
« on: June 17, 2006, 11:07:53 PM »
I am sunburnt, sweaty, mosquito bitten and tired.  I'm gonna go clean myself up, drink many beers, then come back and post all about it.  It's kinda funny actually, and like my other incidents (drops), happened at 10MPH or less.   ;)  Oh yeah, I am completely fine.  Not a scratch on me.  My gear paid off.  Word.

Okay here it is.  I was riding w/ my buddy Louie and a co-worker today.  They wanted to try Cerro Noroeste but we didn't have time to do Ojai, so we went the other way via the 5 to Frazier Park.  Anyway...

Anyone remember this little diddy on Lockwood Valley Road?

Look familiar yet?

Okay April, remember you wanting a picture of yourself doing this?  Well now I can say it's a bad idea because...

This might happen.  Going through the water at about 10 MPH, I decided to sneak open the throttle.  Next thing I know, I'm on the ground in the water, watching the bike doing a bouncing slide away from me.  The funny thing is how far away the bike stopped (25 feet or so) considering how slow I was going, and also that my tank bag came unzipped and my stuff went flying everywhere.  That was actually funny.

As you can see in the picture, the engine case cover got shredded and that meant all the oil came out.  No riding home.  The shifter got bent and the swingarm slider snapped like a twig.  The swingarm has a nice scrape on it but is not damaged badly.  My frame sliders worked beatifully and kept the fairings completely free of any scratches.  The clutch lever is bent.

To continue...

The frame slider worked.

This is why 10MPH + sneaking open the throttle was retarded.  Moss collects on the pavement.  I almost ate it just walking through the water.  It's slippery as ice.

Here's the oil that leaked from my bike.  We didn't want to leave it on the pavement so...

We covered it with sand.

What was funny was we saw this bike parked just before the turn that goes into the water.  It turns out that...

The bike's owner, Pat, had also biffed in the water just a little while before I did.  His bike wasn't damaged as bad as mine was, but it wouldn't start again.  He was waiting for his buddies to go home to get their truck and come back to get him.  All the way to Huntington Beach and back.  Ugh.  If that wasn't bad enough, he said a girl on a Harley did a belly flop into the water just a few minutes before my incident.  Apparently this happens quite a bit.  Lucky for her the bike was fine and she was able to ride away.

This is Barbara.  She works for the US Forest Service.  She stopped by a few minutes after my spill and we had the most confusing, repetitive and utterly useless conversation of the year.  She spent what seemed like an eternity asking if we wanted her to call a tow service, but that AAA or any other tow service she knew wouldn't come out anyway.  WTF did you ask me for then?!  After a while we just gave up and told her we would handle it.  Sheesh.

Unfortunately there is no cell phone service in BFE so we had to find a hard line.  We decided to leave the bike next to Pat's and ride 15 or so miles back to the Santa Barbara Pistachio Company, a little market / single pump gas station in the middle of nowhere but the only place with a hard line for miles.  I had to ride bitch on my coworker John's VFR.  ;D  Coincidentally, it's the same place I had to get gas several weeks ago on the first ride through that area that Ian, JC, Christian and I did.

The girl working the cash register was soooo nice.  She called a tow service for me, but they were unfortunately going to take two hours to arrive.  F***.  AAA won't come out.  My AMA Motow service is only 35 miles.  Even if the tow service showed up in two hours, we'd have to just tow the bike back to the market, leave it overnight, then come back tomorrow with a trailer and haul it to a shop.  I was going to be out $$ for the tow and $$$ for the repairs.  F***.

By sheer dumb luck, some dude pulls up on a beat up Ducati 748.  Thing didn't even have headlights.  Dude looks like a complete slacker.  We start shooting the shit, blah blah blah.  Ends up the dude is in the process of buying (and currently works at) Hang Time Motorcycles in Frazier Park.  He offers to get their truck, load the bike and bring it back to their shop for repair.  I'm stunned.

We head back to where we left the bike while Sean (or Shawn, or Shaun) rides back to his shop.  Pat is still there waiting for his buddies, poor guy.

We had parked the bikes in front of this scary ass Texas Chainsaw Massacre Blair Witch abandoned house.

Yup, it was scary.

We also got a close up look at a California King Snake.

We were waiting for a while.  It was hot and we were getting attacked by all kinds of bugs.  Shade was sparse, we were sunburnt and tired.  Finally Sean arrives.  Unbelievable.  He offered to take Pat's bike to his shop as well; Pat accepted and figured he'd just call his buddies when we got to an area with cell phone service.

Sean is the one tying my bike down; Pat's on the left moving his bike so we can load it.

At last we get the bikes to Hang Time Motorcycles in Frazier Park.  Sean is going to fix my bike this coming week; estimate is only $150 - $200.  He didn't ask a penny for transporting the bike.

The only way I was getting home was by riding bitch on Louie's bike.  He'd never ridden two-up before either.  Fun!

Today was bad because:
* Duh, I crashed.
* I missed the father's day dinner we were supposed to have (yes it was a day early).
* My two friends spent their whole afternoon and evening helping me out.  We didn't get home until 10:00 PM.
* My cell phone got f'd up from the water.  Must be replaced.

Today was amazing because:
* Sean restored my faith in my fellow human being.  The guy went to unbelievable lengths to help me out.  You bet your ass that Hang Time Motorcycles will get plugged plenty on Startriding.com.  Coincidentally, they just bought out Starcycle.  That's part of the reason it moved to Frazier Park.  In fact, it's just two or three stores down from Hang Time now.
* My friends stayed with me all day and night to help me out.  Louie is a stud for getting me home two-up with no two-up experience.

Lessons learned or reinforced:
* Good gear is worth every penny.
* Frame sliders work.
* Standard swing arm sliders do not work that well - the bolts are too thin.
* When riding through water, watch out for moss.  Move slowly, slip the clutch and go as straight as possible.
* Barbara of the US Forest Service is a doofus.
* Crashing where there's no cell phone service = bad.

Wow, I'm glad it turned out ok.  Interesting coincidence.....Terrie and I went down to Carlsbad today (shopping at the Dooney and Coach outlet stores if you need to know  :D)  On the way back up, I was telling her about the time, shortly after I graduated from law school, that I got stranded in the Grapevine when the clutch went out on my pickup.  It turns out I was stranded on the side of the road with three other vehicles that needed a tow.  I was the only female in the group of four waiting for a tow.

There was only one tow service in the area and the other three drivers had called before me so I was 4th in line.  There was a 5th vehicle, an RV, that was also parked on the side of the road with us.  An elderly couple in the RV had pulled over to wait until the sun went down to tackle the Grapevine.

The tow truck arrived well after dark to pick up the first vehicle in line.  I chatted with the RV couple while the rest of us waited for the truck to come back.  After the second vehicle was being pulled away, I asked the couple why they didn't pull out since it was well after dark and the temperature had cooled off.  They said they weren't going to leave me out there in that deserted area by myself and would wait until the tow truck came back for me.  They waited there two extra hours to make sure I was safely on my way.  They were very kind.

On the way back up from Carlsbad, I explained how my friend Karen had to drive up from OC and get me.  Then, she had to drive me back the next day after my truck was repaired.  Terrie jokingly said that she wouldn't have driven all that way to rescue me.  Laughing, I replied, "Yes you would so you're lucky I didn't know you then."

Here's the coincidental part.......I also told her that if any of you ever needed help while on a ride, I would hitch the trailer and come and get you.  We agreed that that was what friends would do for one another.  I jokingly said that if anyone crashed just now, they would have to wait for me to get back home to grab my SUV and trailer.  But I said, it would probably be worth the wait since towing would be ridiculously expensive from some of the areas where we ride.  Little did I know that you had crashed and were stranded Ray. Next time, call me if you need help.  If I can, you know I'll be there.

Thank goodness you're ok and that there were people who could helped you out.  I know you'll have the bike back in pristine condition in no time. :)

P.S. The new camera takes great pictures!

Look at the bright side. Now you have an excuse to get a billet case cover.  They even come with replaceable sliders on them.

Glad you are ok.

Look at the bright side.

The shift lever didn't break?  Wonder what it would take to fit on an SV...

Glad you are OK, and the bike relatively too.

Oh man, what an adventure.  I can't believe that much damage was done to the engine case!  Hope you get your bike fixed up soon.

Wow, Ray!

Sorry to hear about this.  Glad that you are okay.  That is one of the best write-ups on a whoopsie that I've ever seen.

I have a truck, ramp, tools, and tie-downs in case anyone else has an emergency. I'm usually available on the weekends.

Be safe,

H~

Thanks everyone.  Really the damage wasn't that bad; what made it bad was being stranded in the middle of nowhere with no cell phone service and basically no tow services that would come out.  Couldn't even call anyone from the market 'cause my cell phone got damaged in the water so I couldn't retrieve the phone numbers.  Just soooo damn lucky that Sean happened to pull in and started talking to us.

One thing we couldn't stop talking about was how far the bike landed away from me.  If you look at that picture where the oil spilled, that's where my bike stopped.  I was lying in the middle of the water.  As I was falling off I instinctively tried to hold on and goosed the throttle in the process; I totally remember hearing the bike rev up as I went down.  It was really weird; I'm lying in the water kicking back & cooling off, watching my bike slide, pivot and bounce its way to a stop.  "D'oh!  D'oh!!  D'OH!!!"

In any case my arm's a little sore this morning but other than that all this will cost me is a couple hundred bucks.  The only thing that will irritate me is the scraped swingarm; it's definitely not worth replacing but cosmetic damage bugs me.  The swingarm slider just snapped off like it was nothing, but then again those bolts aren't that substantial anyway so it's not surprising.  Oh well.  When I sell the bike I can use the tagline, "Pre-dropped for your convenience."
