bike wont start
« on: March 26, 2006, 02:18:41 PM »
So i rode down to long beach the other night and made it fine, but i started to come home yesterday and my bike just shut off going about 80 and then i pulled over on the N-710.   So th bikes power all turns on and it turns over just wont start.   Its like it is out of gas!   But i know its not because i put 3 gallons in right before i left longbeach.   I checked the fuelpump relay and it works.   If anyone has any ideas on what it could, please llet me know.   Help me save the money i dont have to get it fixed by the stealership...   Thanks everyone

Make sure your fuel valve is set to on and not reserve? if you left it outside someone may have messed with it, other than that i have no idea.

Good idea,  but where exactly is that switch because i do not believe my bike has on.   1999 suzuki gsxr 600.   If anyone knows please let me know.   I think the problem i am having is the computer might be bad.   We ran the test that the manual shows and it failed the one that has to do with the computer.   thanks

I got her running again. YES!!!   I took the plugs out cleaned and sanded them all up and reinstalled.   She started with the choke.  Rode around the block no problems, im going to wait till the weekend to go any further.   But she seems fine, back to normal.   Any suggestions?   Im going to change the oil pretty soon, anything else recomended?

well, something like that happened to me once.  I flooded my carb from tipping the bike over.  Maybe you had a similar thing happen?  Mine cleared up after letting it sit for a day.

Maybe that happened, but i never tipped it.   I went to the local cycle gear and asked them what they thought it could be.   They said to check the plugs and the carbs bowls.   So i did the plugs first and it started right up.   They said i could have overfilled the tank and sometimes that causes the plugs to foul.   Im guessing thats what happened, but i hope everything elses is allright with the bike because i dont want to bring it to the stealership to pay them to fix it.    After i change the oil i think it will probably run even smoother and im thinking of changing to synthetic oil since i have 27400 miles.   What do you all think about that and i am going to use either the oem or k&n filter?
Oh ya when it gets nice out again i wanna get together with some people and do a mellow ride down the 126 or so to ventura area and back to SCV area.

Thanks

Ahhh, the oil debate  ;D

You're probably pretty safe running synthetic. Some will argue its better for the bike. Your call :)

I don't see how overfilling the tank would result in fouling the plugs  ???

Because the bike failed while you were going 80. This could be caused by a fuel starvation problem or carbs. Check the vacuum. Did you have a tankbag on the bike when this happened?

Next time this happens...try emptying the bowls...should be some screws at the bottom of the bowls...give it a crank...also..turn your petcock on prime position if you have a prim position.

good luck

I would definitely run synthetic oil.  It's just superior.  Some people will tell you it causes leaks and ruins seals, but I have never had any problems with it myself in any of the cars I've ever owned.  I've been using synthetic in all my cars since about 1990; I sold one car at 150,000 miles and the other at 130,000 miles with no oil leak issues.  Synthetic oil molecules are smaller and uniform in size, so they do a much better job of lubricating and getting into tight spaces.  Maybe for an engine that is already in bad shape the smaller molecules might cause problems with seals, but I haven't experienced it.

Ya i think im going to go for it, synthetic i mean.   But ya i dont know how overflowing the tank can cause fouled plugs either, but that what cycle gear told me so i checked and it seams to be running fine now.   I didnt have a tank bag on either.   I thought it was a vacuum leak possibly, but i unplugged the fuel lines from the center carb hook up and turned it over and gas pumped out.

Since none of us are professional racers, I imagine synthetic from any of the big name motorcycle oils will be great.

I've been using Royal Purple on my car for some time now.  I'm pretty happy with it.  The idea of synth oils causing leaks is from the oil cleaning out debris that was essentially creating a seal on your otherwise leaky motor.  If your motor's in good shape, you shouldn't have to worry about switching to synth.

I'm planning to use Royal Purple on my next oil change.  I've actually seen dyno graphs (car) where RP increases HP by 3 or more.  It doesn't seem like a lot, but why not use it if it works?  One last thing, my friend started using RP in his car (on my suggestion), and he swears by the stuff now.

From what I hear, when you overfill your tank, your bike will vaporlock.  The fuel needs space to expand from the heat from the engine.
