How do you fill gas without spill !!!!
« on: January 17, 2005, 12:45:02 PM »
Today I got my bike out for a short ride. I took the PCH Route South to Laguna Beach and back to Seal Beach. I put pretty good mile on the bike, around 60 miles and 3 hours  ;D. However, I didn't not ride to eat but ride to drink this time  :P(short stop for starbuck).

Back to the topic, this is second time I spilled some gas on my tank :'(. The first time only just a few drops when putting the nozzle back to place, but this time is something really bad. I got the nozzle that need to push hard in gas tank to get the gas out, if I lift it up to see inside while filling then the gas won't come out (disengage). I then thought that It will automatically shut off after the tank full since I cannot look inside and fill at the same time. You know what happended, it didn't not shut off and the gas spill all over my gas tank after full. This is really suck :-/.

For gas pump nozzles that require you to compress the vapor guard** for activation, I pull the vapor guard** back with my hand so I can still peer in to the gas tank.

Also it helps to wait a few seconds before withdrawing the nozzle. Then slowly withdraw the nozzle and shake lightly over the opening before replacing on the pump.

Exactly as stated above.  Modern gas pumps have vapor guards on the nozzle to ensure that a superfluous amount of gasoline vapors are not being ejected into the local environment which could cause a fire hazard.   The solution to this is to pull the rubber around the nozzle back until the pressure point (or however its triggered) and then only put half the nozzle into your tank.  That way you can visually see when you're close to topping off.

Good luck :)

Here is a little tool that helps hold the vapor guard up out of the way.

flstc2003 - does that tool really work?  As you know, I've ridden through/by-passed gas stations when I've seen those vapour guard muzzels to cross to the street to a station that doesn't use them.  :)
I'm not totally useless; I can be used as a bad example.

must..resist...jokes...

but what to do with terms such as :

...little tool...ejected..."pull the rubber"..."slowly withdraw" (personal favorite)..."shake lightly"..."push hard"...topping off (isn't that some british slang?  and if not, why not?  discuss.)..."fire hazard"

what am i, made of stone?  i need a cold shower!

in eny event, JC has it exactly right...good job, jeff.

boy, you guys drive a tough bargain :P

So let me get this straight.

Pull the rubber, put in only half, look through the hole, ejected, after finished shake lightly and slowly withdraw. Is this correct? ;D

Well, I'm no English so you guys gotta forgive me if I use the words incorrectly. ;)

I do just like Trueblue says, except I also juggle a paper towel to catch the dribbles at the end. Quite the multitasking event I can tell you. I originally got a great post on the womans BB forum from Cindy who described how to fill the tank. I have never splashed lots of gas, but I have had it splash a little from inside to leave tiny droplets on the tank. It seems some of the stations have more graduated pressure than others. I hate when the gas seems to only flow at full force or off, with nothing inbetween. >:(

Yup that what I use the paper towel to prevent the dripping (after the incident). I also experience that some nozzle will automatic shut off after the fuel level in the tank reach the tip part of nozzle but some don't (the one that got the gas all over my tank :P).

The little tool has arrived ::)  As with all little tools it is a bit of a let down. I think with a pair of tin sinps and the correct dimensions I could make one from a scrap of metal. Will see how it works when I get the hog out of the shop

Used "the fuel tool," yesterday.

It is small & easily fits into the pocket of any bag.  As mentioned, it's lightweight & now that we have one, a template could easily be made if people wanted to cut their own.  Although it was like I needed 3 hands to initially get it on the pump, once on, it worked well.  I'm sure with more use, I'll figure out a 2-handed installation system. :)
