MP3 while you ride?
« on: January 12, 2005, 01:54:24 PM »
I got an MP3 player for X-mas and am thinking of using it on my 11/2 hour ride to work.

Has anyone else done this?

Is it legal?

1 ear or 2?

According to the DMV:

27400.  A person operating a motor vehicle or bicycle may not wear a headset covering, or earplugs in, both ears.

*400.  A "motorcycle" is any MOTOR VEHICLE having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider, designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground, and weighing less than 1,500 pounds.

**This prohibition does not apply to: A person wearing personal hearing protectors in the form of earplugs or molds that are specifically designed to attenuate injurious noise levels. The plugs or molds shall be designed in a manner so as to not inhibit the wearer's ability to hear a siren or horn from an emergency vehicle or a horn from another motor vehicle.

I got an iPod for Xmas, and have ridden with it several days now. I have not found it to be distracting at all, and I think it would be really pleasant to have on a longer ride.

flstc2003 - you've seen me wired up for sound.  So far, I've stuck to just one ear.  Like badnoodle suggested - really great for longer rides!!  :)
I'm not totally useless; I can be used as a bad example.

I'm not your type.  I'm not inflatable.

Therapy is expensive. Popping bubble wrap is cheap. You choose.

Tried it for the first time last night. One ear and the only thing I found was it was hard to hear the music on the freeway unless really loud. I am thinking of getting a better ear speaker and maybe attaching it to the inside of helmet or something.
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

I have bizarrely shaped ears, which don't fit earbuds. So I have a pair of light headphones. As for the 'one ear only' factor -- well, one side always seems to get dislodged when I put on my helmet.

I tried the MP3 today. Had it under my jacket on the way to work and could not adjust the volume. On the way home I put it in my pocket and was able to adjust the volume to the road noise.

With my new modular helmet and the music I felt distant or unconnected somehow from the ride. Not sure I liked it.  Felt too much like the truck. I missed the engine nosie  and the wind in my haaa....on my scalp.
