Alpine Stars SP1... April did Jim have these?
« on: May 17, 2005, 02:15:23 PM »
Someone mentioned that somebody had some A* gloves, but I can't remember if it was Jim or Owen....  either way, has anyone heard any word on the quality of these guys?  They look pretty protective.  Cheers

Jim has the SP-S gloves from A*. They're short cuff ones. He has been happy with them. They are a little nicer in construction than my Shock Racing gloves but mine were cheaper. Kneedraggers has them for 62. Figured I'd give thema plug because thats where I got the pic from.

I need the sunshine in the morning, I'm heading for the open road.

Those look pretty neat but I think I want more gauntlet.  I'm currently debating between these SP1s and the Tourmaster Comp Carbon ones that Peter has.  I think the A* may have some more protective armor.  We will see :)

Cycle Gear will be having a sale soon.  Check out the Roo-skin gloves that they sell under the "Frank Thomas" brand.

I liked mine so much that I bought two pairs.

I just checked their website.  They have some good specials going right now.  Especially on womens gear!

Good luck!

Jeff, I have frank thomas pants and like them. I'll give the gloves a look....  Meanwhile I actually changed my mind to be mroe budget conscious... Do you have any thoughts and or experience with the following? (or maybe someone in crashclub you know has a pair)

http://www.newenough.com/firstgear_trophy_gloves_page.htm

Leaniing towards the trophy because its supposedly pretty comfortable, and I like the look of the silver, though the robomax may be more protective....

JC,

I went through a TourMaster "waterproof?" suit in about four months.  That's without crashing!  It literaly fell apart.  I haven't tried any of their gloves besides the cold-weather ones.  (They were not waterproof as was advertised...)  Their luggage has held up just fine.

First Gear is the American name for Hein Gericke.  Their products have always had much higher quality than anything that TourMaster makes.  I use a Hein Gericke jacket almost every day that it's cold.  It's got three years and over 50,000 miles on it and it's still in great shape.

Between the two, I'd opt for Hein Gericke.

Also...

If the gloves have "dual velcro closures" wear your jacket when you try them on.  Some of them go part-in and part-outside the jacket cuff.  The staff at Cycle Gear didn't know that...   Come out to Bravo tonite and I'll show you.

Roo-skin is thinner (for better brake feel), stronger than leather and much cooler.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Jeff.  I think you made great points.   In terms of trying it on, I may just order both pairs and send one back.. for 10 bucks extra shipping here and back, I think its worth it to come up with the best option.  Thanks a bunch!

not since the weather changed--the cortechs have great venting, and therefore not good for the cold.  they definitely offer more protection than my jrs, and are quite comfy--if you open your hand while moving, you feel the air venting thru them--its pretty neat

and they are pissed about being shelved for our "winter", and just itching for a fight

Very true points you made... are you going to bring your cortech jacket out of hibernation as well?

It faired pretty well for me over the winter and spring, but it felt pretty darn warm when I was riding in the north valley last week.... Even at 75 mph on a naked bike, 95 degrees FELT like 95 degrees.  May look into some textiles as we get into end of june and july.

I actually have the tour master robomax gloves, they are ver comefartble, and air seems to flow threw them perfectly, although I dont know how long they would last, or what they feel like on the road as I dont have my first bike yet.

Thanks Kawa...  I just ordered them, in addition to the first gear gloves.  I figure it can't hurt to have two pairs of gloves, and if either don't fit I can send them back or exchange them depending on whether or not I like them.
