Had a weird run in...
« on: March 16, 2005, 05:33:14 AM »
Today while heading in to work along the 210, traffic was really heavy for 10am. There was a CHP guy in the carpool lane, and he was plodding along with traffic at about 15mph.

The two cars between me and him exited out, so now I was behind him. I was really wondering why he wasn't going between the cars along the line.

So, traffic stops alltogether. And I am sitting there behind him. Again, I was wondering what he was doing just sitting there, but I decided that I was going to pass by.

I slowly get next to him and the cars, and begin to go.

He yells at me, and tells me I cannot pass in the carpool lane. Huh?

Isn't that the best place to do it from? There's extra space, and a more controlled traffic flow.

Anyways, he tells me I need to be in the regular lanes, because I can't cross the yellow line.

I am baffled by this. Do you think this guy is some east coast import who has not come up to speed on CA riding?

If I remember my Drivers Ed right a double yellow is to be treated as an island or divider, which means you, can't cross it. I don't think that changes because it is next to the car pool lane. That is not to say it does not get crossed. It does, all the time. Its just most people don’t do it right in front of the CHP   ;D ;D ;D And I am pretty sure anyone who puts on a CHP uniform is up to speed on the traffic laws. No matter where they are from. Their training is intense.

Actually, I called the CHP, and they said it is ok to lane share while in the Carpool lane.

This fellow did seem to be ill informed, so I dunno why he said what he said.

Yanno, what if he was one of those imposter cops?

The ones who buy a used police bike, and then dress in official looking uniforms? Even the CHP badging.

He seemed weird enough to be one of those.

I once, splitting in carpool lanes, then the traffic got flow around 55 mph which I stopped and follow the car in front of me and you know what one CHP came behind me and shared lane and crossed all over yellow line (double double yellow lines) at 65mph. go figure.

I alot of time ride in gap between double yellow lines in carpool lane on 57 and 5 FWY. ;D

Dude, I lust after the wide line they have on the 57. It has a white line, and then about four feet, and the the double yellow, with metal hiccups only on the fast lane side.

Total motorcycle lane, I love it when I go that way.

Be careful on those 4 yellow lines + 1 white line (on 57 HWY) which seems to have enough space for bike to share lane but it is pretty tough to control the bike and if one have to do a quick stop, that might be a big problem.

Oh yeah, that area where it's two double yellows, with the full assortment of irritating metal hiccups.

Luckily, traffic only seems to stop up for me when we are past that area. I think that's the road going through Anaheim, right?
