ACH/ANF Wildfires
« on: September 04, 2009, 11:37:39 AM »
Well I figured the largest fire in Los Angeles County's recorded history deserved a dedicated thread.

Interactive Map:  http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-la-fire-map-html,0,7464337.htmlstory

L.A. Times coverage: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/wildfires/

I'd bet a dollar that once ACH is reopened, it's going to be significantly more dangerous in terms of falling rock and debris in general than it was before, in that lower area.  What a shame.  I hope they find the a-hole who started the fire.

I'd further bet another dollar that a lot of folks south of the burn areas in La Canada, etc. are going to be in real trouble if/when we get sudden and prolific downpours in the mountains.  I hope the debris basins can handle it.

Any thoughts?  Hey Ray, Cerro Noroeste is looking closer all the time!

If Cerro Noroeste is what I think it is, that is THE most beautiful and fun road I have ever travelled.  Ian and I hit it a few years ago. Near Ventura, right?  Incredibly twisty and yet open? MMMMMM.....

The whole fire thing is just so sad.
Last news was that Nukes made it but Hidden Springs Cafe burned to the ground. I'm also hearing that in some places the road melted. I've ridden most of the roads that the fire went through--even Alisio Canyon and Soledad Canyon Rds.

LA Times photo--Angeles Crest Highway :'(

Cerro Noroeste is great but Ray and Judd said that it was under construction and had a lot of gravel the last time they went.
I need the sunshine in the morning, I'm heading for the open road.

Hidden Springs cafe?  Was that the little place with a gravel lot and a small counter, with tables outside?  Oh man, that sucks so bad!!!!

Yeah that was the place.   :'(  I remember stopping in there on one of the earlier group rides I went on with you guys.  Had the funniest bathrooms ever.  I also distinctly remermber the first time I went there; I sat next to some idiot telling me he just crested part of AFH going 110 and blew by some cops measuring an accident scene.  Anyway it sucks it's gone.

Cerro should be fine by now, but yeah it looks like ACH is gonna be outta commission for a while.  We got the whole thing open for a few months and then this happens.   :(

Yup, that's the one.  Looks like we'll be doing that loop a little more often...

That's crazy about the road melting, April.  Too bad about Hidden Springs Cafe - I've been by there several times, but never stopped in.  Now, I regret not having done so before.  I was wondering about Nukes.

Carla and I had just started hiking trails other than the Mt. Wilson Trail from Sierra Madre - Vetter Mountain, Switzer Falls, and a couple of others - now that area will be all burned out for many years.  :(  What a bummer.  Time to check out the high country I guess.

Judd, I think it's going to be a bit hot for me for a huge ride.  When are you bringing that new bike out for a track day?  :)

Angeles Crest Highway closed indefinitely because of fire
September 4, 2009 |  1:25 pm

More than 40 miles of the Angeles Crest Highway from La Canada Flintridge to Islip Saddle have been closed indefinitely because of the Station Fire, which has burned off road stripping and destroyed guard rails and signage along the scenic route, Caltrans officials said.

Judy Gish, a Caltrans spokeswoman, said the highway’s pavement remains largely intact, though further damage to the 66-mile road is possible as the fire continues. She said it was too soon to estimate the cost to repair the highway or when it could be reopened.

The Angeles Crest Highway, one of the main routes through the San Gabriel Mountains, runs from Foothill Boulevard to State Route 138 northeast of Wrightwood.

The two-lane road handles as many as 11,300 trips by motorists a day, depending on the section of the highway, according to Caltrans.

Best update I've seen to date...some guy from ADVrider got up to Nukes on a press pass and took some pictures.

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10843861&postcount=9023

It is still burning on the eastern front and they expect to have it contained by Tuesday. Mudslides are going to be a disaster.
