coast ride sat 8/1
« on: July 27, 2009, 12:25:55 AM »
My bro and I are planning to do a long ride up the coast on Saturday, maybe as far as Pismo or SLO depending on how we're feeling.  The route is definitely flexible but we wanna head north.  Everyone's welcome to come out.  We'll get an early start so we can be back at a decent hour, and we'll definitely hit some great roads (and food  ;D) on the way.  Post up if you're interested.

Meet: 8:30AM, Saturday 8/1
Place: TBD
Route: TBD, but somewhere up the coast

Here's a tentative route.  It's slightly insane but we can pare it down if it's too much.  I based part of it on Jim and April's statement that hwy 58 is awesome, plus it hits so many other great roads including Cerro Noroeste and not-so-traveled parts of highway 1.  Anyway take a look and let me know what you guys think.  If it's too long we'll shorten it.   ;)

Meet in Valencia
Head up the 5 to Frazier Mountain
Cerro Noroeste to 166 to Maricopa (gas stop)
Maricopa to 58 to San Luis Obisbo (lunch stop w/ a break in between)
San Luis Obisbo to Pismo Beach (cinnamon rolls stop)
Hwy 1 through Guadalupe to Los Alamos (gas stop)
101 > 154 (San Marcos Pass) > 101 > Ventura (gas stop)
Head home

I gotta whimp out and say that's too much for me for one day.

We did the first ride over 2 days back in the end of May. Let me just say I was glad when I got to Pismo Beach that I had a room there!  Also the whole central valley will be over 90 degrees. It was much cooler when we went.

Its cool though... you guys have fun. ;D

i think i'm gonna vote for the shorter route.  by the end of it, my back will probably thank me for saving those 50 miles.

The shorter route will work.  Jim and April, you guys are no fun haha.  I'm gonna post up a Big Bear ride though for 8/15 (Saturday); hopefully you guys can make that one.

Have fun - we have family in town from Chile and I can't be away all day.  :(  Might try to get a ride in fairly early tomorrow morning ...

I am seriously hurting.   :P  It was a great ride and I love the California back country, even though Cerro Noroeste had just been repaved (about 70% of it) and there was loose gravel everywhere  :(.  We had a bite at Screaming Squirrel, then made it to Pismo for cinnamon rolls (always good).  The ride home was painful; the KTM looks better and better every time I take a long ride.

I'm sore just thinking about it. ;D We just did an easy afternoon ride.
I need the sunshine in the morning, I'm heading for the open road.

For some weird reason, when I think of a comfortable bike for long rides, I don't immediately think of a KTM Super Duke. Must be an age thing

I had to do an early morning ride Saturday (probably should have called Mark :-\), so I did ACH from La Canada Flintridge (left there about 8:15) to Wrightwood and home. Great ride - very little traffic and beautiful cool weather. Nice!

It's gotta be more comfortable than my bike!   ;)

That's for sure!

Actually, it may be fine - you guys have ridden one, I haven't.

That settles it - get one :thumb:

i was still sore this morning from that ride.  i think i might have to put an embargo on rides that length (350 miles) on a sportbike.  or, maybe i was just upset that cerro noroeste was all gravel.

and on a bonus note, i got to test out the frame sliders!  tipped it over in a parking lot.  got too hurried 'cause some lady was waiting impatiently for the parking spot i was leaving.  was turning full-lock, tapped the front brake, and down it went.  only damage is a small scratch to the mirror.  money well spent on those sliders!
